It was a very silly, over the top toy.Thank you for your comment!

“purple ponies” is not a very common phrase, but it does conjure images of a plastic toy pony that was popular among children in the 1980’s, My Little Pony. I'd like to think that they are companies in need of people who can take on legacy sites, but so often I think it's HR people not knowing what they are typing.I think it's one thing for a developer to where many hats. I think it's another to expect to get a multi-talented expert for cheap.

Surprisingly, some people still call for it, often alongside PHP. I've seen a lot of primping and preening from folks in this industry and in marketing or even real estate. That to me smacks of insecurity. The true expert is the one who can say, "you don't need this."As far as trying to hire one person to do four people's jobs, that's across the board. I remember in 01 going out for a receptionist job in college. Somehow they thought I was also going to double as the marketing person for a 15-person firm, for $10/hour, no benefits. It's amazing how much time companies easily waste on both sides by not understanding what certain jobs cost or what skills they actually entail.

That’s one of the rare times I’ve seen someone actually write an article to talk about what a client doesn’t need. Talk about redundant specs! That's bizarre to hear about tape backups. I can't imagine they found a very competent designer. I'm not being snarky! It's the truth!

PHP and ASP, Photoshop and Fireworks, Dreamweaver and GoLive. They list ASP and PHP, when I know dang well they don't need both. Around here, the purple pony usually ends up being tape backups. No, really. Boggle over that for a second. The companies in my area try to hire a single tech person for all their needs. This person is expected to design websites, troubleshoot everyone else's computers, and maintain the network, including daily tape backups. Twice have I been turned down for a design position because I didn't know how to do tape backups. That's just ridiculous.

I have answered SO MANY ads that look like that. They list ASP and PHP, when I know dang well they don’t need both.
