About
Rachel Nabors, web designer extraordinaire
I currently operate out of Carrboro, North Carolina, and serve clients in the Triangle area. You can frequently find me at local web developer events like Refresh, the Triangle Web Women’s meetup, the Raleigh Drupal meetup.
WordPress is my CMS of choice. I work with CSS, XHTML and JQuery.
Origins
I started making web sites when I was a teenager, mainly as a way for me to post my webcomics online. It wasn’t long before my comics were picked up by iVillage’s gURL.com, and I was making a small living from them. However, I knew that to keep making them for a living, I was going to have to keep and grow my audience of teenage girls.
Thus began my affair with social media. I used to say that the hardest part of making comics was keeping up with all the newsletters, social sites, and in general keeping the fans happy. It was a full time job–taking up more time than making the actual comics!
But it worked, and my readership grew steadily.
It wasn’t until I left web comics to pursue web design that my obsession with front end design began. I realized that most Flash design couldĀ be easily replicated with more accessible JQuery and CSS, and that there was a right and a wrong way to use CSS, something many novice designers don’t realize.
Hit the Ground Running
Most of my skills I learned from doing, from working with experts, from reading the blogs of experts, or from sitting in the bath tub for many hours reading books. I was homeschooled as a teen, and that was where I gained my self-motivation, my drive, my love of learning. Nothing makes me happier than a fresh challenge or a new skill to learn.
A Love of Birds
I love birds, specifically crows. They are fantastic creatures, and I feel they best embody the spirit with which web professionals and hobbyists work together.
